About Us
Our rehearsal year normally runs from early September through to June, with breaks for Christmas and Easter, to include a concert in January and a second at the close of the season.
Composers featured in our concerts range from the time of Purcell – with his Ode to Saint Cecilia through to 20th century composers including Faure and Bernstein – his Chichester Psalms.
In 2004 Handel’s Judas Maccabeaus was a memorable concert while his most renowned Messiah drew an appreciative audience in 2007.
Brahms, Bruckner, Haydn, Schubert and Dvorak have all featured over the choir’s eight year history. Besides this the choir has celebrated three notable birthday anniversary concerts: In 2006 Mozart’s 250th, then in 2007 Elgar’s 150th, performing his Dream of Gerontius at the De La Warr Pavilion with sister choir Battle Choral Society (also directed by John Langridge), and in 2008 we celebrated the 200th anniversary of Mendelssohn’s birth, presenting his most renowned choral work Elijah.
The choir offers a range of social events for those who wish to attend, besides other activities such as supporting our local hospice with carol singing at The Arndale Centre. Some choir members have recently, lead singing from music-hall times through to songs from some musicals, at the local Age Concern centre. Last year we participated in Eastbourne’s first Street Traders Christmas Event. We will continue to explore other musical opportunities.
